In Search of the "Local"

Join current apexart resident Conrado Uribe and Carlo McCormick in a discussion about the relevance of the “local” in contemporary curating. Coming from Medellín, Colombia, Conrado Uribe will be talking about the politics of place as it relates to his work in Medellín and his experiences during his stay in New York.

Conrado Uribe is a curator based in Medellín, Colombia. Since 1999 he has been involved in different types of art and aesthetic researches with Universidad Nacional de Colombia sede Medellín, Universidad de Antioquia and Museo de Antioquia. He has worked at the museum since 2001 and he occupied posts such Curator Assistant (2004-2008) and now the Vice-Director of the Curatorial Department. He curated projects such as Faces of Trinity-Forbidden Images and Teofanías-an exhibition by Jose Alejandro Restrepo (Museo de Antioquia, 2008). And he has co-curated projects like Imagen Regional VI (Banco de la Republica, Colombia, 2007-2009) and Destierro y Reparacian (Exile and Repair), held at the Museo de Antioquia in 2008. He is a contributing writer for Colombian art publications ARTERIA and ARCADIA and the Director of a weekly radio program focused on interviews about art and culture.

Carlo McCormick is a popular culture critic and curator living in New York City. He is the author of numerous books, monographs and catalogues on contemporary art and artists, and has lectured and taught extensively at universities and colleges around the United States. His writing has appeared in Aperture, Art in America, Art News, Artforum, Camera Austria, High Times, Spin, Tokion, Vice and countless other magazines. He has curated shows for the Bronx Museum of Art, New York University, the Queens Museum of Art and the Woodstock Center for Photography. Mr. McCormick is Senior Editor of PAPER magazine.
