The Place of Public Art

Brazilian artist and curator Eduardo Verderame, current apexart resident, will discuss the complex and ever-changing role played by public art in Brazil -- and, by way of comparison, New York -- based on his experience as an organizer of several large-scale arts events that are part festival, part street intervention.

Eduardo Verderame (born 1971) is a visual artist and curator, based in São Paulo, Brazil, He holds an MFA from São Paulo University, granted in 1996. His work deals with diverse subjects, such as imaginary universes, utopias, disenchantment, representation/mockery of violence, and the decadence of cultural codes. Since 2001, he has curated exhibitions and events with a focus on urban space as the stage for plastic intervention. Co-founder and member of two art collectives, EIA (Experisncia Imersiva Ambiental) and Esqueleto Coletivo, through these groups Verderame has organized a series of festivals and contemporary art events in the streets of São Paulo, promoting ecology, human rights and the free use of public space. He was recommended for this residency by Regina Silveira, visual artist, Brazil.
