Konjit Seyoum was born in 1963 and raised in Ethiopia. She is a curator, gallerist, writer, educator and artists and studied at the University of Trieste in Italy where she graduated in Translation (she speaks Amharic, English, French, Italian and Croatian) In 1996 she opened Asni Gallery to promote contemporary Ethiopian art and create a venue for young and established artists to exhibit their works. Seyoum has been curating between five and six major exhibitions a year that involved paintings, sculptures, photography and installations. She has been interested in experimental approaches and in particular how contemporary Ethiopian art relates to worldwide artistic traditions. This year she travelled to Senegal to visit the Dak'Art Biennale of contemporary African art and to Germany to see the eleventh Documenta. She has been experimenting with installations and has been lately mainly working on the topic of AIDS. Her most recent project (installation) is to create a visual commentary on the development of Ethiopian "modern Art". This project will relate to the paper she presented on the Addis Ababa Fine Arts School and the Development of Ethiopian Art at the Sixth International Conference of Ethiopian Art held in Addis Ababa in November, 2002.
