Erzen
Shkololli
(born 1976, Pejë, Kosovë) is an artist, curator and co-founder
of EXIT Contemporary Art Institute in Pejë.
His art practice utilizes local rituals and folklore to draw attention
to socio-political situations. Through his work, Shkololli acts
as a sort of instinctive and biased anthropologist, re-enacting
traditional ceremonies, while insinuating contemporary symbols and
disillusion. This interplay of past and present typifies a certain
generation of art practice throughout the Balkans, locating Shkololli
within this broad cultural context. He has exhibited internationally,
with solo exhibitions in the Czech Republic (2005) and Lucca, Italy
(2001), as well as numerous group shows and biennials, including
INTERRUPTED HISTORIES at the Museum of Modern Art in Ljubljana,
2006; In the Gorges of the Balkans at Kunsthalle Fridericianum,
Kassel, Germany, 2003 (organized by past apexart Resident, Natasa
Petresin); and most recently New Video, New Europe curated
by Hamza Walker for The Kitchen in New York. His work has also appeared
in significant European museums of contemporary art like the Stedelijk
Museum in Amsterdam and the Tate Modern of London. In 2001 he was
awarded the Premio Michetti Prize of the Fondazion
Michetti di Francavilla al Mare, Italy.
Shkololli has curated numerous international exhibitions of contemporary
art including History started playing with my life at the National
Art Gallery in Prishtinë (2005) and Reappearance at Museum
of Kosova in Prishtinë (2004), in addition to programs and
exhibitions at EXIT Contemporary Art Institute. He is currently
working on a project featuring the work of artists from Israel,
Palestine and the region of ex- Yugoslavia, which will be presented
at the Israeli Centre for Digital Art, Holon, Israel in 2007.
Erzen Shkololli
is in residency with apexart as the recipient of a CECArtsLink Fellowship.
