Maria-Kristiina
Soomre (1978, Tallinn, Estonia) is Curator of Contemporary
Art at Kumu Art Museum (Art Museum of Estonia, Tallinn). She has
been active as an art critic and columnist in Estonian cultural
press since 2000, collaborating mainly with the only local cultural
weekly Sirp,
magazines kunst.ee and Estonian Art as
well as the National Television (2005 art program "Aku" -
producer, editor and co-author). In addition to curating exhibitions
at Kumu, Maria-Kristiina Soomre organizes also electronic music
festival "Kumu ÖÖ", seminars and conferences;
she is also lecturer at Estonian Academy of Arts. Her curatorial
projects at the Kumu Art Museum include both original exhibitions
of Estonian and international contemporary art as well as producing
and administrating collaborative projects with different curators
and institutions around the world. The contemporary art program
of Kumu Art Museum is based on exhibiting both the current tendencies
in the local and international art scene, as well as introducing
the classics of modern and contemporary art to the Estonian public
who, due to the past behind the Iron Curtain, has little knowledge
of post-WWII developments.
Maria-Kristiina Soomre was recommended by Rael Artel, an independent curator and art critic based in Pärnu, Estonia. Ms. Soomre's residency is supported in part by the Cultural Endowment of Estonia. Read Ms. Soomre's online journal.
