Valerie Crosswhite was born in Baltimore, Maryland and now lives and works in Manhattan as a painter. She received her BFA from the Cooper Union in 2002. She recently exhibited of her paintings in conjunction with the New York International Latino Film Festival. Her work deals with comic sexuality, giddy voyeurism, animal spirits, and life lessons.

For the first time in our 16-year history, apexart held an open call for our Residency Program, which Valerie won with her insightful essay. We invited submissions of 250-word essays to apply for an apexart Outbound Residency Program in Seoul, South Korea. The call was open to all creative individuals in New York City who were at least 30 years old and had never traveled to Seoul before. Because we ask residents to refrain from working on professional projects during their residency, our criteria for selection was not based on applicants' artwork, but rather on their desire to explore new cultures and learn through experience.
