Modris Svilāns (b. 1979, Aizkraukle, Latvia) started his career at Rezeknes School of Art and Design in the Department of Metal Design. In 2000 he moved to Riga and studied at the Art Academy of Latvia working towards a Masters Degree from the Department of Metal Design. During his studies at the Art Academy of Latvia, he started working on his own art projects and also custom orders. He has worked on props in some Latvian and Russian movies as well as the reconstruction of historical objects in medieval castles. Between custom orders, he participates in different art projects and exhibitions with photography and kinetic art works. He has taken part in different exhibitions in Latvia and Europe. Solo exhibitions mainly show his photography, but have included some kinetic art works in combination with analog photography. He loves to use historical photographic methods along with digital processes. He takes part in Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day and also sometimes makes use of this technique as his artistic form of expression.
