Thematically,
Stanford Watson's topics are cryptic and personal. Like his classmate
Omari Ra, Watson works in the raw style of figurative painting
described as neo-expressionism. Watson insists his paintings be
looked at as objects, not windows, by incorporating nontraditional
materials on his canvases (such as paint mixed with sand and dirt).
Watson graduated from the Jamaica School of Art in 1983, and lives
and works in Kingston, Jamaica.
Mr. Watson was recommended to apexart's residency program by Dr.
Catherine Amidon, Director of Exhibitions at Karl Drerup Art Gallery
at Plymouth State College in New Hampshire. Dr. Amidon was the
commissioner for the first Jamaican Pavillion at Venice [2001 Biennial].
